5 Healthy Foods to Eat This Fall

Crisp autumn air makes comfort food almost irresistible. Even those with the healthiest diets find themselves reaching for warm pastries, hearty pastas and creamy casseroles more often than usual during fall. While there’s nothing wrong with having one of these indulgent options occasionally, there are also several other fall foods that give you that same warm, comforting feeling – but pack a nutritional punch. Next time you have a craving, reach for one of the healthy options below.

Spaghetti squash

Rich in vitamin C, potassium and fiber spaghetti squash can aid in preventing inflammation and boosting brain function. The noodle-like vegetable can be used as a pasta replacement and is best paired with your favorite sauce.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is the ultimate fall food – and it also happens to be an excellent source of vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin C and dietary fiber. There are countless delicious ways to prepare pumpkin, but we recommend this Pumpkin-Cranberry Loaf.

Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamin A which helps bolster vision health and the immune system. Vitamin C, fiber and vitamin B6 are also found in sweet potatoes. For a simple sweet potato dish, chop sweet potatoes, drizzle them in olive oil and top with basil, then roast them in the oven at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

Pears

Pears are full of vitamins and minerals many Americans don’t get enough of, including fiber, vitamin C and potassium.

Apples

Apples are rich in antioxidants, which fight free radicals and strengthen the immune system. They are also high in fiber, which regulates blood sugar and bolsters digestive health. Sauté apples with sweet potato, kale and chicken apple sausage for a quick, healthy one-skillet dinner.

It’s simple to satisfy your cravings for fall comfort food and eat healthy, as long as you turn to the right fruits and vegetables. Check out more healthy fall recipes and nutrition tips on the BHealthy blog!
