Arkansas has one of the highest rates of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, in the country, with the condition affecting nearly 15% of our population. Though ADHD can present significant hurdles for those with the condition, many of them live productive, healthy lives through a variety of treatment options.
An individual is diagnosed with ADHD when he or she displays at least six out of the nine (five out of nine for individuals 17 and older) symptoms of either inattention type ADHD or hyperactivity-impulsivity type ADHD over a period of six months or longer within at least two settings, such as home and school/work. Read on to learn more about the symptoms of ADHD and find out if you or someone you care for may need a professional evaluation.

Loses necessary items frequently
Doesn’t seem to listen, even when directly spoken to
Often distracted by extraneous stimuli or thoughts

If you notice you or your loved one has six or more (five out of nine for individuals 17 and older) of the symptoms listed in either category, make an appointment with your physician or a licensed mental health provider to talk about your concerns. If diagnosed with ADHD, an early diagnosis will allow your physician to create a treatment plan that can help you or your loved one live a healthy, happy life today and in the future.
If you are concerned that you or someone you care for is showing symptoms of ADHD and would like a professional evaluation, request an appointment with one of our expert physicians or licensed mental health providers at Baptist Health.
