Your Weight Loss Journey

The Baptist Health Bariatric Center-Little Rock is committed to providing the most effective intervention for the treatment of obesity. We offer a comprehensive surgical approach for the long-term care and treatment for patients who qualify. Weight loss surgery isn’t for everyone. Only those with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or those whose BMI is 35-plus and have other obesity-related health problems are eligible. This usually means the patient is at least 100 pounds overweight.

The patient’s experience begins with an educational seminar where they will receive materials and information about surgical weight loss. After attending a seminar, either in person or virtually, the patient will submit intake forms that our access team reviews. After initial information screening, the patient is then scheduled for a consultation with the surgeon to discuss surgical options and tasks to complete before surgery. Once all clearance tasks are completed, the surgery is scheduled. Our goal is to provide the best care for our bariatric patients.
Our comprehensive program offers a wide variety of patient support options and added assistance services:

  • Educational seminars about morbid obesity and bariatric surgery (in person or online)
  • Thorough patient evaluation and assessment
  • Assistance with insurance approval, pre-certification, and/or financing
  • Coordination of all pre-surgical testing and physician visits
  • Comprehensive follow-up care
  • Assistance with a support network
  • Informative literature
  • Exercise guidelines
  • Dietary education classes
  • Benefits review
  • Insurance eligibility assistance

Long-term, Follow-up Care

Your surgeon and the bariatric program staff will want to see you at regular intervals following surgery to monitor your progress, review your blood test results, and answer any questions you may have. Discuss with your surgeon specific follow-up timelines and make every effort to keep your appointments. Your overall success and well-being after surgery are related to following medical, exercise, and dietary guidelines outlined by the bariatric program.

Bariatric Surgery Support Group

Our surgeons agree that ongoing support after surgery leads to the most significant level of success. The Baptist Health Bariatric Surgery Support Group provides an opportunity for you to discuss personal or professional issues that arise from surgery or a history of obesity.

It also enables you to surround yourself with other people who understand and support your goals. Join the Baptist Health Bariatric Support Group on Facebook to be connected with other Baptist Health patients as you navigate your new journey towards lasting weight loss.

Why it’s important to choose a Bariatric Center of Excellence and a board-certified surgeon on your weight loss journey.

Using the internet, exploring health topics is now easier than ever. You have access to learning about procedures, reading about providers,  and researching more about the health systems that offer the care you need. The bigger question is determining which hospital facility and providers will offer the best care possible and the highest quality standards. At Baptist Health, our bariatric surgeons are board-certified. That means our providers have been evaluated through various criteria set forth by industry experts. Being accredited and board-certified means our surgeons provide the highest level of care. Accreditation ensures that our program line and physicians are continually working to stay up-to-date and trained on the newest treatment procedures, providing safe surgical care, and yielding successful results. In addition to having highly skilled surgeons, Baptist Health Bariatric Center is designated as a Bariatric Center of Excellence and a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Institute of Quality. This designation identifies our surgical team and program as providing quality, effective care for our patients before and after surgery. The application process is thorough and comprehensive. Both the hospital and the surgeon must have high volumes of patients and surgeries that yield successful outcomes along with a low number of reoperations or complications. Bariatric surgery accreditation not only promotes uniform standard benchmarks but also supports continuous quality improvement. These designations recognize that Baptist Health Bariatric Center has implemented defined standards of quality care.

Baptist Health was recently recognized as one of the 101 hospitals that earned the distinction of Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery.
