Orthotics (Custom Shoe Inserts)

Proper function of the foot and ankle is important to the overall performance of the lower extremity. When there is a problem with the biomechanics of the foot causing the foot to not function properly, abnormal stress occurs leading to the breakdown of the joints and soft tissue resulting in pain. Custom orthotics are used to help control or correct the foot and lower leg alignment. The biomechanical orthotic does this by placing the foot in the optimal position to restore the normal biomechanics and to control excessive and potentially harmful movement of the foot and ankle during walking or the gait cycle. Orthotics are used in treating a variety of foot, ankle, knee, hip, lower extremity syndromes and conditions of the spine.

Orthotics are used in treatment of:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Posterior Tib Tendonitis
  • Ankle Sprains/Strains
  • Toe Pain
  • Heel Pain
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Shin Splints
  • Patellofemoral Pain
  • IT Band Syndrome
  • Hip Bursitis
  • Leg Length Issues
  • Spine Problems

A custom orthotic begins with a comprehensive biomechanical evaluation including tests and measurements. Then a cast of the foot is made in a neutral, non-weight bearing position. The orthotic is fabricated using the cast and measurements to create a custom fit to correct the specific and individual problem areas of the foot. The orthotic will cushion, support and control the foot to improve function and decrease pain. They easily slip into your normal shoes and can be worn in a variety of shoe styles. Custom orthotics are also available for specific sports or activities.
