Bone mineral density (BMD) is a test that measures the amount of calcium in a specific region of the bones. From this information, an estimate of the strength of your bones can be made. Bone Density tests are used to:
- Identify decreases in bone density before you break a bone
- Determine your risk of broken bones (fractures)
- Confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosis
- Monitor osteoporosis treatment
Your physician may recommend a bone density exam if you have:
- Lost height
- Fractured a bone
- Taken certain drugs
- Received a transplant
- Had a drop in hormone levels
