Tips for Exercising in Arkansas’ Winter

When winter weather moves into Arkansas, it can be hard to make it to the gym or go for that morning run. Thankfully, Arkansas doesn’t get as much snow and ice as other states, so with the right preparation you should be able to safely exercise outside in spite of the temperature.

Dress Appropriately

Don’t underestimate the importance of wearing the right clothes. Insulated fabrics like polyester or polypropylene do a much better job of trapping heat against your body than a traditional sweatshirt so pay attention to the types of clothing you put on before you start your workout routine.

Layering is also essential for keeping your body the right temperature while you work out. Don’t dress too warmly; even in below-freezing temperatures, you can sweat causing you to chill. Simply layer a synthetic material against your skin that allows the sweat to pass through the fabric away from your body. Wear a wool, polyester, or fleece covering over your top to act as your primary source of insulation. And, if it is really cold outside, choose a light third layer to keep the cold air, wind or rain out.

Don’t forget about your head and feet. Wearing the right cap and socks will prevent heat loss from those sensitive areas. You’ll also want to protect your skin against extreme cold by covering any exposed skin. Skin can freeze after just 30 minutes of exposure to wind chills below zero. So if there’s wind that day be sure to cover up that skin!

Stay Hydrated

In the summer, it’s easier to remember to drink water or pace yourself while working out. That’s why being aware of the effect colder temperatures have on your body is so important. If you can see your breath, you’re losing moisture and can become dehydrated. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids before and during your workout to stay hydrated, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Don’t use winter weather as an excuse to not stick to your routines and goals! With a little preparation you can conquer the cold and enjoy a fun, winter workout.
