4 Reasons to Regularly Visit an OB/GYN Before Pregnancy

Buffy Michelle Maynard, MSN, RNCOB, APRN, NPC Family Nurse Practitioner

Yearly visits to your Obstetrician/Gynecologist (OB/GYN) help keep you healthy, and they play a particularly important role in preparing you to get pregnant whenever you’re ready for a baby. Read on for the top four reasons why you should regularly visit an OB/GYN, and how those visits prepare you for pregnancy.

1. You can find an OB/GYN you feel comfortable with before you conceive.

By regularly going to the OB/GYN before you’re ready to have a baby, you can give yourself time to find one you trust. Your OB/GYN will help you prepare for pregnancy.

2. Your medical history will be up-to-date.

A detailed gynecological history will help inform your conception plan, and give your physician the information they need to make the most educated decisions regarding you and your future baby’s health.

3. Your doctor may uncover health issues that need to be addressed.

A routine gynecological exam could uncover a health issue that will need to be addressed before you try to get pregnant. Ideally, you want to uncover these issues well in advance of when you’re ready to have a baby. For example, if you have fertility issues, you’ll be more informed and know your options.

4. You’ll be better prepared to get pregnant when you’re ready for a baby.

Once you decide you want to get pregnant, you’ll be well ahead of the curve if you’ve had regular gynecological visits, instead of having to play catch up learning about your body, your health and your ability to conceive.

Your OB/GYN plays an integral role in your health throughout your life, and you want one you trust to be part of your care team when you decide to get pregnant. If you’re looking for an obstetrician/gynecologist, request an appointment with one of our expert physicians at Baptist Health.
