HEARING SCREENINGS
Every infant delivered at Baptist Health has a hearing screening prior to discharge. Initial testing is done with a Transient
Evoked Auditory Emissions Unit. This is a non-invasive exam that is painless.
If the infant needs further testing, we use the Automated Auditory Brainstem
Response Unit (AABR). This exam is also a non-invasive and painless.
Infants that are
unable to "pass" these exams will be referred to an area audiologist
in infant testing. If an infant does not pass the initial screening in the hospital,
it does not mean the infant cannot hear. Certain factors such as gestational
age, fluid in the ear, molding, etc. can effect early test results.
