BHRI General Rehabilitation » Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's Disease is a slowly progressing neurologic disorder. It is characterized by hand tremors, a reduced ability to change facial expressions, shuffling walking patterns, forward bending of the trunk, balance problems, and muscle rigidity and weakness. At BAPTIST HEALTH Rehabilitation Institute we believe that although there is currently no cure for Parkinson's Disease, there are interventions that can prolong the quality of life for individuals afflicted with this disease. These interventions include:
- Medication Therapy
-  Physical Therapy which addresses ambulation, fall prevention, and
balance control.
- Occupational Therapy which addresses daily living activities such
as cooking, dressing, home making, etc. as well as energy conservation
techniques.
- Speech Language Therapy when speech or swallowing problems are present.
- Psychosocial adjustment counseling.
- Assessment of home equipment needs.
Patient and family education from Rehabilitation Nurses and Therapists.
- Development of home exercise and activity programs.
- Dietary counseling.
- Therapeutic Recreation activities.
- Support groups.
- Resources for home and vehicle modifications.
