Neuromuscular Disorders
Neuromuscular disorders and conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis,
Guillian-Barre` Syndrome, Post-Polio Syndrome, and Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) may all cause varying degrees of
loss of muscle control and weakness as well as other neurological
problems. These lead to a loss of independence in mobility, self
care and other routine daily functions. Even though many of these
diseases are progressive in nature, a knowledgeable and experienced
rehabilitation team can help many individuals experiencing these
neuromuscular disorder to improve their functional abilities.
The General Rehabilitation Program at BAPTIST
HEALTH Rehabilitation Institute offers the following services
for individuals with various neuromuscular disorders and conditions:
- Medication Therapy.
- Pain Management.
- Physical Therapy to address general strengthening and flexibility,
balance, mobility training (e.g. getting in and out of a car, in
and out of bed, etc.), walking training, and fall prevention.
- Occupational Therapy to address daily living activities such cooking,
dressing, home making, etc. as well as energy conservation techniques.
- Speech Language Therapy when speech, swallowing or cognition problems
are present.
- Wheelchair and cushion seating assessments.
- Psychosocial adjustment counseling.
- Assessment of home equipment needs.
- Patient and family education from Rehabilitation Nurses and Therapists.
- Development of home exercise and activity programs.
- Dietary Counseling.
- Respiratory Therapy.
- Therapeutic Recreation activities.
- Resources for home and vehicle modifications.
