Amputations

BAPTIST HEALTH Rehabilitation Institute (BHRI) provides two phases of intervention for individuals who have experienced either surgical or traumatic limb amputations.

Acute Phase - Prior to prostheses (artificial limb).
The services offered during this phase include:

  •  Wound care
  •  Diabetic education and skin care
  •  Physical Therapy with emphasis on general strengthening, flexibility, and mobility training with a walker or crutches.
  •  Occupational Therapy for training in daily living activities such as cooking, dressing, home making, etc.
  •  Dietary counseling Adjustment counseling from Neuropsychology.
  •  Development of home exercise and activity programs.
  •  Therapeutic Recreation activities.
  •  Resources for home and vehicle modifications.

Prosthetic Phase
Physical Therapy will be the primary discipline involved with individuals who have an amputation of the leg and Occupational Therapy will work with those who have arm amputations. The emphasis in this phase is on training in the use of the prosthetic device and may be conducted on an outpatient basis.
