The BAPTIST HEALTH Sleep Disorders Clinic offers help and sleep disorders treatments for patients who are unable to sleep or are chronically sleepy. Patients often will not complain of sleep-related behaviors, but of their consequences - loss of energy, fatigue, memory lapses, difficulty in concentrating, decreased sex drive, and/or frank sleepiness such as with driving.
How much sleep is enough?
The amount of sleep each person needs is as individual as their personality and can be affected by age, activity, diet, time of day, medications, general health, emotional status and genetics. "Enough" sleep is the amount of time an individual needs to stay awake and alert at all points during the day until near bedtime.

...And how much sleep is not enough?
People deprived of sleep or whose sleep is not restful may experience a laundry list of problems influencing their own lives and the lives of those around them. Irritability, lack of attention and alertness, slowed reflexes, poor judgment, decreased productivity, mood alteration, accidents and deterioration of health are just a few of the potential consequences of poor sleep. Chronic sleep problems have been linked with higher mortality rates.
| Lack of Sleep Takes Toll |
According to the 2005 "Sleep in America" poll by the National Sleep Foundation, 74% of respondents reported at least one symptom of a sleep disorder for a few nights a week or more. In April 2006, a report by the Institute of Medicine estimated that 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from a chronic disorder of sleep or wakefulness, leading to a wide range of consequences that negatively affect health, safety and productivity. Across the country, health care providers are recognizing the need for assessment and treatment of sleep/wake disorders.
